In your home there is a rocket. It weighs between 300 – 1200 Lbs. and can, without even a moment’s notice launch itself through the roof of your home. Yes it is your water heater.
To significantly reduce the risk of a rocket taking off in your house, the T&P valve should be checked on a regular basis. (Temperature & Pressure Relief Valve) It a simple and quick test and in my opinion should be done at least a couple times a year. More often the better.
Here is a short article going into more details about the function and testing of the T&P valve. As a home watcher, standard inspection procedures includes water leaks, temperature settings and we occasionally pull the T&P valve to ensure that it is not seized. A defective T&P valve is a disaster waiting to happen.
